- Files from a formatted or wiped drive
- Data from a laptop that was dropped or damaged
- Photos and videos from SD cards and USB flash drives
- Files from external hard drives that stopped working
- Data from SSDs with controller or connection failures
- Business documents, QuickBooks files, and email archives
The Two Types of Data Loss - and Why It Matters
Not all data loss is the same, and the type determines what recovery is possible and what it costs.
Logical failure means the drive hardware is physically fine but something went wrong with the file system or data - accidentally deleted files, a formatted drive, a corrupted partition, or files lost after a crash. These situations have high recovery rates and lower costs, typically $100 to $300.
Physical or mechanical failure means something inside the drive itself has failed - a clicking or grinding noise, a drive that powers on but is not recognized, or a drive exposed to liquid or impact. These are more serious and require hardware-level recovery, typically $300 to $800 or more depending on the drive. If you hear clicking or grinding, stop using the computer immediately and call us.
What to Do Right Now
If your drive just failed or you just deleted something important, the most important thing you can do is stop using the computer. Every write to a failing drive reduces recovery odds. Do not run Windows repair tools, do not restart repeatedly, and do not try to copy files off a clicking drive.
Call us at (401) 884-4432 and describe what happened. We’ll tell you what to do next and whether to bring the drive in or have us come to you.

Data Recovery Questions
How much does data recovery cost?
Software-level recovery (deleted files, corrupted file system) typically runs $100 to $300. Physical drive failures that require hardware-level work typically run $300 to $800 or more. We assess first and quote before starting - no surprises.
Can deleted files always be recovered?
Not always. When you delete a file, the space is marked as available but not immediately erased. The more you use the computer after deletion, the lower the odds. On SSDs, a process called TRIM can quickly erase deleted data permanently. Call us as soon as possible - time matters.
Do you recover data from external drives and USB flash drives?
Yes - internal hard drives, external hard drives, USB flash drives, SD cards, and SSDs. If it stores data and something went wrong with it, we can assess what is recoverable.
